O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in the early part of 2005, when she was still a high school student. She made it to the 100th round because the judges were thrilled at her singing performance. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges, however she was a victim of significant loss in the top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted in the bottom three spots and second-bottom two places and bottom two, respectively. They were stunned by the results and encouraged the audience to support those with great singing talent, like Melissa. In spite of consistently impressive performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished within the top three. Her performance on the 7th of September of 2005 was awe-inspiring that the judge Werner predicted the newspaper headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie, becoming the 3rd Canadian Idol. O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
